We’ve all been there.
The session is in two hours. You’re exhausted. You forgot they were going to the temple, not the tavern. You haven’t even opened your notebook. What now?
Here’s the secret: you don’t need to prep everything. You just need to prep the momentum:
- Not the whole city; just the first person they meet.
- Not the entire temple; just the clue on the altar.
- Not all the lore; just the one thing that makes them want to learn more.
Three Things Worth Prepping (When Time’s Running Out)
- A Named NPC with a Quirk: Give them a name, a goal, and something weird, like missing teeth, soot-stained hands, a voice like cracked glass. You can build out from there as needed.
- A Strong First Impression: Describe the entrance, the smell, the sound, the unsettling thing they notice immediately. The first 30 seconds of a location do most of the heavy lifting.
- A Hook That Goes Somewhere: A letter tucked into a robe. A phrase that doesn’t make sense until later. A rumour that makes them want to ask one more question.
Momentum isn’t just narrative, it’s curiosity.
Start Small, Expand Later
When you’re pressed for time, focus on the things that give you room to improvise. You’re not laying down train tracks, you’re tossing out stepping stones, and you can always fill in the gaps between them later.
